week 10 post 1, recycled student housing

I came across this article on The Local's website that reflects much of the themes I have spent time talking about in this blog. Being creative by using recycling is an interesting tactic for the housing solution because it not only solves the problem, but demonstrates creativity to the youth that is using them. By showing the youth-who are open to new ideas as they go through their education- a creative solution to a problem, the Stockholm officials are in a way demonstrating an expected way for them to start thinking. It is interesting that student housing, for the city and surrounding areas, was enough but not enough funds were available to use to construct housing from scratch. This can show to some extent how Sweden treats its financial matters and what is important enough to deserve funding. These structures also represent the welfare state, with the city using what ever it can to provide housing for all that need it. Even though the funds might not be available and the city could have let this problem run its course, they have taken ownership of the problem in agreement with the welfare state 'folkhem' base that each person deserves a providing home. It is interesting to look at small subtle ways that historical ideas are still being carried out in modern efforts.
